The end of summer and writing schedules #sol18

During the summer, I typically stay up late and sleep late. I often find the hours around midnight to be my optimal time to write and the words seem to flow more. I’ve written about 6,000 words in one WIP and most of those words poured out of me between 11:00 pm and 1:00 am.

However, this week is the last before I return to school and I’m trying to break the late night habits that characterized the summer. I know that I need to adjust my schedule as the new school year begins. Like my students, I need to make sure that I get enough sleep, which will cut into my midnight writing time. I’m going to have to prioritize time for writing just like I would anything else that needs to be a part of my schedule.

This week, I have a three-day long board retreat for VSRA, and that’s going to allow me to phase in getting up early. This will also enable me to play around with my writing schedule and see which alternatives are the most productive. Then, I can hit the ground running during next week’s Teacher workdays!

I to have enjoyed changing the lifestyle rhythms this summer, but alas, all good things must come to an end. We’ll be heading to the State Fair next week, and I’ll be sleeping in the barn, so early rising will be a must. Just not sure how much good sleep I’ll get! πŸ™‚

Thanks for the reminder that, yes, school is coming, whether we want it to or not! πŸ™‚
